Policy
Materials Selection for School Library Media Centers
The Bullitt County Board of Education is legally responsible for all matters relating to the operation of the schools, but delegates its responsibility for selection of materials in the following manner:
Selection Personnel
Materials for school libraries should be selected by professional personnel with recommendations from administrators, faculty, students, and parents. Final decision on purchase rests with professional personnel in accordance with the formally adopted policy.
Types of Material Covered
Criteria is established for all types of materials included in the school library media center.
Objectives of Selection
In order to assure that the school media program is an integral part of the educational program of the school, the following selection objectives are adopted:
To provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum and personal needs of the users, taking into consideration their varied interests, abilities, and learning styles.
To provide a background of information which will enable pupils to make intelligent judgments in their daily lives.
To provide materials on opposing sides of controversial issues so that users may develop, under guidance, the practice of critical analysis.
To provide materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, and aesthetic values.
To provide materials which realistically represent our pluralistic society and reflect the contributions made by these groups and individuals to our American heritage.
To place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials of the highest quality in order to assure a comprehensive media collection appropriate for the users.
Criteria for Selection
Selection should consider the needs of the individual school based on a knowledge of the curriculum and on requests from administrators and teachers.
Consideration should be given to individual students based on a knowledge of elementary and secondary youth and on requests of parents and students.
Selection should provide for a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty, with a diversity of appeal and the presentation of different points of view.
The library material should provide insight for living in the world today.
Materials should have useable format.
Selection Tools
Reputable, unbiased, professionally prepared selection aids are consulted as guides.
