Students are not admitted to the library without one of the following passes. Much important information is recorded on these passes and the back side of last week's menu from The Great Wall of China does not include an organized way of entering this information. The monk who used to transcribe and illuminate the passes for each individual leaving the library has retired and we are stuck now with just the Xerox copier. It's less entertaining but certainly more efficient. Also please note:

• You may know the last name of every Heather in your class, but we don't. When we take roll, it confuses the students if we simply call out "Any Heathers at all?"
• It helps us to know the date of issue of the pass. If it's blank, the carrier may well have been hoarding it in a shoe since last semester / year.
• Sign the pass yourself. Believe it or not, we come to know your signature and it lends some veracity to the permission implied by the document.
• Include the time the student left your class. If that's blank, as far as we know the carrier may have participated in an armored car robbery between leaving your classroom and arriving at the library.
• No students should ever return to your class from the library without the pass you sent them with or the "Return to Class from Library" pass shown below. If they do, insist that they return to the library and get it. If you don't, you'll never know whether they went to the library or spent your class handmaking $20 bills in the back parking lot.

	This pass is used for one student visiting the library during the school day. It is important that it be filled out completely - date, student's first and last name, teacher signature, and the time the student left class should be filled out by the person sending the student to the library. When the student turns the pass in at the circulation desk, the time the student signed in is noted on the pass and the pass is kept at the desk. When the student signs out at the desk to return to class, the time is noted on the pass and the pass is signed by a librarian. If the student stays until the end of the block, "bell" is checked and the pass is returned to the teacher's mailbox. If "did not sign in" or "did not sign out" is / are checked, the student did not follow the sign-in / sign-out procedure.
The above pass is used for sending 2 - 6 students to the library. All the students on the pass should come to the desk to sign in. Sign-in time for each student is noted on the pass and the pass is kept at the desk. If all individuals on the pass return to class at the same time, sign-out time is noted on the pass and the pass is signed by a librarian and carried back to the teacher by the students. If not all the people on the pass return to class together, sign-out time for each is noted on the pass and an idividual return pass (see below) is issued for returning to the teacher. When the last person leaves, the group pass is signed by a librarian and returned to the teacher by the last student. If the last student stays until the end of the block, the pass is returned to the teacher's mailbox during the next block.

The pass to the left is used for sending a student on a group pass back to class without the rest of the group. The information on this pass will also be included on the group pass which will either be brought back by the last student on the pass to leave the library or returned to the teacher's mailbox.
