Student Aide Program
Every year, the media center staff trains students to work as aides in the library. These students are registered for a full credit course. They spend five days a week working in the library for ninety minutes. The training enables them to work the circulation desk, checking materials in and out, and reshelving books, do light housekeeping tasks as well as other tasks related to processing, and assisting with the duties of the clerical assistant, computer maintenance, and web site creation and maintenance. Some reference work is also possible. Aides work in the library for a full semester and then receive a grade from the librarians.
Arts Display
With its large windows looking out on the main hall and lobby and low shelving units, the media center is extremely well suited to the display of art objects. The students are encouraged to display their work in the library, and in fact display areas are nearly all in use from the opening of school until the closing in June. These displays are primarily maintained by the studio art classes. In addition, art prints are purchased, framed, and displayed in the library. In this way, the student body's general awareness of the arts and humanities is enhanced. The ancillary benefits of displaying student art along with that of famous artists is self-evident.
Operatics
The Operatics are a group of students, teachers, and staff who attend performances by the Kentucky Opera Association three times each year. These performances are "preview" performances, essentially the last dress rehearsal before opening night. They always occur on a Wednesday evening at 7:00. Tickets are $8.00 each. Performances generally end about 10:00. The Operatics who choose to meet for dinner before the performance, about 5:15, somewhere in the downtown area. Members are responsible for their own transportation, but carpools are usually readily available. To join the Operatics, see Mr. Rivard in the library.
Shakespearean Scene Festival
Every year students from Bullitt Central attend and perform at the KY Shakespeare Festival's Student Scene Festival. At the festival, students perform scenes along with students from other area high schools, and sometimes from other areas of the country, for an audience of their peers and teachers. This program is organized through the English and drama classes and facilitated by the library. The festival is not a competition, but rather a sharing and celebration of student work and accomplishment. A mini-festival is held at BC in mid-March and scenes selected by the student audience perform at the scene festival.
Bibliophiles
Bibliophiles is the literary club of Bullitt Central. The Bibliophiles meet once a month to eat, drink, and merrily discuss their current reading. Twice a year the members read and discuss the same book. To join Bibliophiles, see Mr. Rivard in the library.
